Tanker explosion: Quick thinking driver narrowly avoids flames

It was a close call for the driver.

The tanker on fire on the highway near Southport.

The trailer of a large truck, believed to be transporting flour, caught fire and exploded on the highway near Southport (Louisiana area) late this afternoon.

A thick plume of smoke could be seen drifting upwards in the overcast sky.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Glen Preston of Med-Evac said the tyres had started to burn and the driver, when seeing this, had unhitched the truck and moved it away, so only the trailer was damaged when it exploded and caught fire.

Fire and rescue were on the scene, as well as paramedics.

Saps will perform an official investigation, as is the regular protocol.
