Top Ugu Cluster detective retires
Detective/Captain Jaques Buys has played a pivotal role in several high profile cases.
Friday, November 29 was a memorable day for Detective/Captain Jaques Buys of the Ugu Cluster Detectives who reported for duty one last time.
Det/Capt Buys, who has played a pivotal role in several high profile cases, is retiring.

Captain Buys who was born in Potchefstroom underwent two years of military training which propelled him into the policing profession in 1990.
An intensive police training programme at Pretoria Police College groomed him for a long and fruitful policing career. Capt Buys served in 1991 at the Port Shepstone Stability Unit, now called Public Order Policing, and was transferred to the Margate Detective Service in 1996, working on murder and robbery cases from 2001 to 2007.
His vast experience moulded him into a disciplined and hard-working employee which resulted in him being promoted to Captain in 2015 of the Ugu Cluster Detectives.
Capt Buys came second in the detective category in the 2018 National Excellence Awards and won the best detective in the province at the Provincial Excellence Awards last year.
In his role as a detective, Capt Buys played a pivotal role in several murder and robbery cases, where he positively linked cellphone activity to the scene of the crime.
One case which affected him deeply was the rape and murder of an 80-year-old woman in Margate in 2010, where her son was also killed.
Capt Buys has created many friendships during his career with Saps, and his absence on Monday and thereafter will be tangible.
A new chapter in his book of life is about to be written and Capt Buys will be utilising his abilities and expertise in the private sector.
Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele said his weird sense of humour and snow-white hair will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of working closely with him, and who could count on him as a friend. She wished him well on behalf of her cluster.
