My Take: Shop till you can’t take it anymore

We just need to buy a swimming costume each for the kids, and get a loaf of bread and some milk.

These were the words uttered by my wife as we drove to the mall last Sunday just before lunch.

We were tired before we left.

Three hours and four minutes later we left to come home, beyond exhausted.

It seemed every man and his dog – yes, there was a sneaky pooch that eluded security – was in the shopping centre.

Traffic on the way in was heavier than usual, an indication that the holiday season is approaching, and perhaps the first inkling that it wouldn’t be an in-and-out visit.

There was a Christmas tree and other decorations, but no Boney M music playing – at least not yet!

South Coasters need the forthcoming season to be a good one.

While the mall wasn’t necessarily jam-packed inside, it was certainly busy.

All this aside, a shopping mall can be a lot of fun, even if you are hungry, tired and eager to get home to lie down on the couch with a good book.

Bearing in my mind it was my wife’s idea to go shopping, she could not complain too much when I bumped into an old friend.

A brief catch up was needed, but both our respective wives produced a mutual, pained ‘eye roll’ and headed off to continue shopping.

The problem was that, later, I then had no idea where they had gone.

The modern cellphone is a wonderful thing. A quick WhatsApp message and everything was back on track.

What did we do before that?

We came to an agreement as to time and place.

Like the time my mom and dad, early in their marriage circa 1971, went their separate ways while shopping in Durban, before the days of the big centres.

See you at CNA at 1pm? Sure.

Both waited about an hour … but at different spots as the CNA had relocated!
