Hibberdene Happenings: Ethne will always be fondly remembered

Sadly, Ethne Harrison died recently. Born in 1928, this ‘grand lady of the South Coast’ died peacefully on the cusp of 2020 – on December 31, 2019.

At 91 years of age, she had a full, rewarding life and watched the South Coast develop over the last 70 years. For most of her life, she lived on the family farm situated inland of Hibberdene where together with her husband, Noel Wood, they farmed sugar cane and ran the family trading store business at Esgodini.

Ethne is survived by her children, Marion, Grant, Shelley and Renee, and her grandchildren. She was famous for her contributions to the local community and her shows, including the Hibberdene Tennis Club annual fundraiser and the Round Table extravaganzas, were legendary.

She had the unique knack of harnessing the talent of the local community for these ever-popular shows and will be remembered as a wonderful mother who offered unconditional love to her family and friends over the many years of her life here on the South Coast.

Ring the dates

Mizpah Church holds it first breakfast of the year at the church this coming Saturday (18th) at 7am at a cost of R10 per person. These breakfasts are always uplifting and are interdenominational, so please make every effort to attend. Contact Edgar Lilje at 084 5820772 for any enquiries.

The Methodist men’s breakfast kicks off on Saturday, February 1, at 7am. Those wishing to attend should submit their names to Debbie Fletcher at the church office 039 6992948 the week before to facilitate catering.

Generous donation

The ‘Centre for Concern’ which operates from St Margaret’s Anglican Church in Margate, runs a self-help sewing class and was recently the lucky recipient of a complete set of craft and needlework books, donated by the Lions Club of Hibberdene.

They were gratefully received by Angela Ford and her husband Alan from the centre. Several fiction and non-fiction books were also donated to a local church.

Tickets are presently being sold for the Lions’ December/January raffle, which will be drawn during the second week of February, so do hurry and buy tickets timeously.

Take note

In an amendment to last week’s news on the distribution of medication to the clinic, it appears that only patients who receive their medicine from ‘Pharmacy Direct’ are eligible to collect from the Lions at the clinic itself, on whichever day has been designated to them. Others should continue to receive theirs from hospital staff in the town hall on a Wednesday, as has been done in the past.

Good wishes

Veronica Davids is delighted to have her husband Ian visiting her for a few weeks. Ian is presently living in Kisumu, Kenya, where he operates a business, but will shortly be retiring and returning to South Africa permanently. He is wished a happy holiday.

With most of the holidaymakers having returned home, holiday fever seems to have been replaced with ‘back to school’ fever and stationers and school clothing outlets have been doing a roaring trade.

Those starting ‘big school’ for the first time are wished everything of the best as are those beginning high school and moving into matric. Last year’s matrics are still basking in the glory of their achievements and long may they continue to do so.

There are no anniversaries on record for the week, but birthday wishes go to Cally Muir (16th), Sue Myburgh (18th), Kleintjie Snyman and Chris Joubert (19th), and Dirk Leus (21st).

Remember to keep Lizzie busy with all things Hibberdene.
