Fidler in the Hood: What’s a little prickly heat between friends?

The temperature’s rising, the thunder and lightning seem to be having their way, but as far as we’re concerned it’s a lovely day.

Greetings friends. The temperature’s rising, the thunder and lightning seem to be having their way, but as far as we’re concerned it’s a lovely day. Trying times for those who just say ‘cool’ to any topic under the sun.

We live in real trying times, so count your blessings: we also live in a wonderful, near-perfect climate, so if your sweatshirt is riding high or running, just ride with it and enjoy life. On with the show.

Getting in and out

The Christmas and New Year rush has come and gone. Traffic is back to so-called normal and frayed nerves and tempers have cooled it. The inquest has now begun. Was it a good season or not? Judging by the number of out-of-town cars in town and crowds on our beaches, perhaps we made it again this year.

Baubles, bangles and beads

The monthly update on crime statistics and incidents has been received from Uvongo Ratepayers’ Association. Christmas wasn’t all crackers and considering it was high season, the number of house break-in incidents were well within acceptable limits, which is encouraging. Most incidents occurred during the night, with Sectors 1 and 3 in Uvongo as ‘targets for tonight.’

Remember: In this case, it doesn’t pay to advertise your worldly possessions. Be alert, be streetwise, don’t fall for any hard-luck stories and you will fine and dandy.

Great Gatsby in town

Show business is back. Margate Retirement Village’s ‘Residents Activities Committee’ (RAC) have a real blockbuster of a show coming up at the Azalea Hall on Saturday, February 1. Cathy Peacock and her fabulous platform jazz group will present a ‘Great Gatsby’ shindig, live and up close and personal. Platform jazz is played ‘pitch perfect’.

Those old jazz standards are guaranteed to get everyone in the mood again. Shelley McLean (not Shirley) will be on vocals. Apparently when Cathy was eight-years-old and living in Salisbury, her dad Don Peacock made her practice every day, learning to play the trumpet.

As a friend of the family, Cathy used to call your scribe ‘uncle’ and pleaded with him to ‘ask Don to go easy on her practicing’. No such luck, as the Peacock’s free meals at their Borrowdale home was too enjoyable.

The rest is history – Cathy is one the country’s foremost trumpeters, both with her platform jazz outfit and the KZN Symphony Orchestra. More than 40 years on, Cathy is still ‘in the mood’. The plus side is that Cathy doesn’t call your scribe ‘uncle’ any longer, but ‘oupa’ when his back is turned. Cheek!

Tickets for this once in a lifetime (down here) show are on sale at the Village’s RAC office from 8am to 12 noon and cost R85 each. It’s a BYO supper table party with fine wine and dining courtesy of yourselves.

A great musical evening is assured, so dress up to the nines for the occasion Great Gatsby style and theme. There will be prizes for the best-dressed Gatsby couples although, sadly, it is rumoured that Scott Fitzgerald will not be around to present prizes.

Who’s getting nervous?

On a lighter note, there’s absolutely no truth in the rumour that present incumbent editor of the South Coast Herald, David Rush is going round with a somewhat rattled, nervous air and staff are lying low.

Heard through the grapevine that ‘Rushie’ glanced at the latest football results and muttered something like ‘City are back to their winning ways again.’ Liverpool watch out – we’re back. You read it here first. See you, Rob.
