SAA cancels flights to conserve cash

If you are a passenger on a South African Airways (SAA) flight in the next few days, take note, as the airline is in the process of consolidating selected domestic and international flights to save cash.

Affected domestic flights are between Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as between Johannesburg and Durban airports.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 21, an SAA spokesman said on the domestic front, the airline is working with its sister airline, Mango, to re-accommodate passengers to minimise disruption.

On the international network, SAA is also cancelling selected flights between Johannesburg and Munich. SAA will re-accommodate passengers on its services between Johannesburg and Frankfurt as well as London Heathrow.

Some passengers travelling via Munich to other destinations will be re-accommodated for some of their journey on partner airlines in the Star Alliance to minimise delays.

According to the statement, these decisions are in line with SAA’s usual policy of reviewing flights consolidating services with low demand. Furthermore, during the current process of Business Rescue, these cancellations represent a responsible strategy to conserve cash and optimise the airline’s position ahead of further capital investment.
