So close for KZN golfers at San Lameer
It was a strong showing from the tournament underdogs.
The KZN Mid-Amateur golf team finished third in the recent SA Interprovincial tournament held at San Lameer Country Club.
Coming back up from the B Section, this was a solid performance in an extremely hard-fought tournament.
However, after beating defending champions Gauteng North on the opening day, they perhaps could have gone the whole way and won.
But margins were fine and just about all the games could have gone either way.
The irony was that KZN beat the top two finishers (Gauteng North and Western Province), and lost to the bottom two (North West and Boland), and halving with fourth-placed Central Gauteng.
However, at the end of it all, they had much to be proud of.
The team was led by Gavin Sole (Southbroom GC), who played foursomes with his Southbroom teammate Jean-Marc Bouic.
Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park) was the third Southern KZN player in the team.
The rest were Clayton Mansfield (Mount Edgecombe CC), Kalvin van Rensburg (Toti), Grant Olivier (Drak Gardens), Greg Smith (Simbithi) and Gitesh Maharaj (Toti).
Overall winners were Gauteng North, spearheaded by former Margate CC and Sunshine Tour player Andrew Curlewis.
