Surprise Exco visits for Umdoni high schools

The biggest motivation was for all parties to work together to achieve a 100 percent pass rate for 2020.

UMDONI Municipality’s Executive Committee made unannounced visits to five high schools in the area last Wednesday, in an attempt to assist in improving the performance of pupils in Grade 12.

Schools visited included Hluzingqondo, Phindavele, Gugulesizwe and Sihle high schools which all had 2019 pass rates ranging from 83 to 98 percent, as well as Zithokozise High which had a pass rate of just above 50 percent.

“All seemed in order and the councillors commended the schools for ensuring teaching and learning was in progress on the first day back at school,” said Umdoni Municipality communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

Principals at the schools were pleased to see their staff and pupils being motivated by the municipality, and at the same time, made councillors aware of the challenges schools faced.

“Councillors also shared words of wisdom with the class of 2020 and strongly condemned teenage pregnancies and the use of drugs,” added Ms Cele.

“The biggest motivation – which was enthusiastically welcomed by both pupils and teachers – was for all parties to work together to achieve a 100 percent pass rate for 2020.”
