Copper cable thieves arrested in Umkomaas

The men were found in possession of roughly 8 000 metres of copper cables belonging to the municipality.

Three men were arrested in Umkomaas last night, February 5 after they were found in possession of roughly 8 000 metres of copper cables belonging to the municipality.

Local Saps members, together with eThekwini Municipality’s Infrastructure Theft Unit uncovered the syndicate with the truck full of cables while patrolling the area.

eThekwini Municipality’s chairman of Human Settlements and Infrastructure, Thanduxolo Sabelo commends all those involved in the arrest.

“We are very happy with the work done by our unit and the police because it will send a strong message to criminals who want to steal from the municipality,” he said.

Sources have revealed that the cables are worth an estimated R850 000.

An official police report is awaited.
