Where is our recycling going?

The current service provider's contract with the municipality has ended.

Recycling bags were not collected from Umtentweni on Monday this week, leading to questions about the state of the South Coast’s recycling initiative.

Reggie Govender of Coastal Waste Services, who ran the recycling depot in Ravine Lane in Marburg for many years, said the company’s contract with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality had ended, and the business was moving to Izotsha.

He however issued assurances that all the bags of waste and recyclable materials at the Marburg depot would be moved by the end of the month.

Mr Govender said they were contracted to run the municipality’s ‘green project’ from about 2016, but told the Herald they had not received any recycling from the municipality since October last year, adding he was not sure where these materials had been disposed of.

The Herald contacted Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for comment but none had been received at the time of going to print.
