Tweni Talk: Take up the spekboom challenge

How is the spekboom challenge going? Are you planting one a month, one a week? Remember that no excessive maintenance is required. This is one small effort that everyone can make towards the fight against global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Teach children how to propagate them from slips off an adult plant – they make wonderful gifts and can be used as a fund-raising project for small, struggling organisations.

Please do not give lifts or money to beggars who stand at the traffic lights. Begging is illegal and people who are really in need of assistance can approach one of many organisations for assistance. Guys asking for lifts usually get into your vehicle and relieve you of some of your possessions during the short ride from traffic light to traffic light.

Many do not have families to feed and in most instances are begging to feed drug or alcohol habits. If you do employ casual labour, remember to get a copy of their ID.

Day time house break-ins are on the increase. If you have to be away, please warn all staff to be on the lookout or make sure that they lock the back of the house when working in the front and vice versa. Their safety and the safety of your house depends on this safety practice.

What with load-shedding and the storm knocking out power in some areas last weekend, many people in Umtentweni were without power for six hours. The extra time was due to the earth leakage tripping and not being detected.

Remember, when expecting load-shedding, switch off all unnecessary appliances, lights and geyser, so that on start-up there is no overload on the incoming supply.

Bester Vujevic had an unwanted and unexpected visitor in their bathroom last Sunday – a variegated bush snake. Jolene was pleased to report that it was safely removed to the garden

Davina Campbell of Umzumbe celebrated her 80th birthday last Sunday and she is wished all the very best for many more, healthy happy years. Birthdays this week are Sigrid Sokolich (February 5), Wendy Beukes and June Rundle (6th), Glen Preston (8th), Gavin Jepson and Craig Roodt (9th) and Lorraine Smythe on the 11th.
