Helping the homeless help themselves

Most of those who attend these services are homeless, and some are battling addiction.

PASTOR Neill Fick, a local evangelist, has begun his very own project to help people living on the streets in the Scottburgh area, and now holds a church service in the activities room at Scottburgh library every Sunday.

“I do a little bit of preaching, along with some praise and worship, screen a movie and provide lunch,” he said.

Most of those who attend these services are homeless, and some are battling addiction.

“Regardless of what these people are going through, I want to help put them onto the right path and show them that with God, anything is possible,” he added.

In an effort to provide practical assistance, Neill aims to offer counselling at the same venue from time to time in the future.

“I’d like to get to the root of their problems and see why they ended up living on the streets, and maybe even try to trace their family,” he said.

Helpers at last week’s service are (from left) Petro and Johan du Plooy (Coastlands Revival Church), Cyril Msomi (Spur), Neill Fick (evangelist), Sine Pieterse (Spur) and Christoff Smit (Coastlands Revival Church) with Bianca van Wyk in front..

The community has rallied to help, with Atlanta Spur agreeing to sponsor meals every alternate Sunday, while Petro and Johan du Plooy from the Coastlands Revival Church donated clothes and a company called Hartland has also donated generously.

A number of volunteers have offered their assistance, for which they too are thanked.

“We should not look down upon homeless people and addicts, but rather uplift them and help them better themselves,” said Neill.
