Chamber talk was ‘out of this world’

The topic under discussion was ‘The Ugu district from outer space’.

Economist, Dr Clive Coetzee, made a return to guest speaking after a three-year hiatus at the first South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry business breakfast of the year.

The meeting, which took place at the Good Life Café in Shelly Beach on Thursday last week, was well attended by members and guests whose interest had been piqued by the topic under discussion, ‘The Ugu district from outer space’.

Dr Coetzee, currently the chief director of infrastructure for the Provincial Treasury in KwaZulu-Natal, was speaking in his private capacity, and opened by promising to tempt his audience’s visual senses.

He touched on the history of satellites and the role they played via remote sensing data in the collaboration of information that was used as a predictive tool to create an economic picture of an area.

“Big brother is watching us, and there are more than 5 000 satellites in orbit as I speak,” he said.

“The use of data generated by remote sensing year on year enables the creation of visionary charts and creates an economic picture of the area.”

To demonstrate this Dr Coetzee compared the energy of man-made power in the Ugu area over 28 years to show the economic ebb and flow of the region.
