Child (8) drowns in Mtentwana lagoon

A group of children was swimming when several got into difficulty.

Last Sunday afternoon, NSRI Port Edward duty crew was  activated to assist at Mtentwana lagoon where a child had been reported missing.

According to NSRI Port Edward station commander, Gerrit du Plessis, sea rescue craft Rescue 32 Alpha, NSRI rescue swimmers, Saps, Police Search and Rescue and Med-Evac ambulance services responded.

“Eight local children, believed to be aged between six and eight, were swimming in the lagoon when some of the children got into into difficulty.

“Two of the children were transported to hospital by ambulance, reportedly suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms. It was then confirmed that one child remained missing, and was suspected to still be in the lagoon,” he said.

“Our sea rescue craft was launched and the children pointed out where they had been swimming. The search for the missing eight-year-old boy then commenced.”

Police scuba divers located and recovered the body of the missing child.
