The origins of the Women’s World Day of Prayer date back to the 19th century when Christian women initiated a variety of cooperative activities in support of missionary work throughout the world.
In 1887, the women from the USA and Canada called for a day of prayer for missions. Women in other countries enthusiastically joined the call for united prayer (and action) and today more than 176 countries and regions, on all continents, celebrate the World Day of Prayer on the first Friday in March.
All countries have the same theme which is prepared by a specific country each year determined by the international committee. This movement brings together women of all traditions and races in closer fellowship, unity and a better understanding of each other.
The WWDP enriches women’s faith through interaction and prayer with other Christian women.
In South Africa, this is one day where Christian women take hands and are united in prayer for the healing and restoration of relationships and justice in our nation and country.
The first service in South Africa was held in Cape Town in 1930. The WWDP is 90 years old in 2020. This year the resource material is compiled by the women of Zimbabwe.
