Southcity’s team are top talkers

The team comprising Ethan Saunders, Sarah Joy Pringle and Ondela Mtati impressed the adjudicators.

Southcity Christian College scooped the winner’s title in the preliminary round of the Rotary and Daily News team speaking competition held at Hoërskool Suid-Natal recently.

The team comprising Ethan Saunders, Sarah Joy Pringle and Ondela Mtati impressed the adjudicators with their topic, ‘at what point does being WOKE become a hindrance?’

The runner-up was the Hoërskool Suid-Natal team of Zarike Gouws, Linki Buitendagh and Shanze Marais who focused on the subject, ‘I am different’.

The outstanding speaker title went to Joshua Nadas Govinden of Port Shepstone Secondary whose team spoke on ‘ageism’.

The runner-up were Hoërskool Suid-Natal’s Zarike Gouws, Linki Buitendagh, Shanze Marais and teacher Desiree Klopper.

“The standard of content was exceptional, including the relevance of topics which were well-handled,” said adjudicator and Rotarian Robin Broide of the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast.

Overall six schools participated including Creston College, Mcushwa Junior Secondary, Port Shepstone High and Port Shepstone Secondary which entered two teams.

The semi-final round will be held from March 2 to 14 with the finals to be held at Howard College, UKZN Durban on April 21.

The competition is a valuable exercise in teamwork and development.

The Daily News will sponsor R 20 000 which the winning school passes on to an underprivileged school of their choice, for the improvement of facilities.
