New stalls for Umzinto traders
The municipality hopes that this project will bring organised trading to the town, as well as strengthen urban/rural links as most of the vendors are from local informal settlements and rural areas.
UMDONI Municipality recently initiated the Umzinto Market Stalls project in an effort to better the business environment for informal traders and consumers in the Umzinto central business district.
“This project will increase financial benefit while simultaneously providing support to local vendors,” said Umdoni Municipality communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

The council, led by mayor, Thabani Dube, prioritised the construction of 96 stalls in this busy town.
“As Umzinto is the main business hub surrounding most clusters of Umdoni, it became imperative for the municipality to offer assistance by providing this reliable trading infrastructure which will ensure it is always business as usual for the informal traders, regardless of the weather,” said Ms Cele.
The Umzinto market has been running in the CBD for many years. Vendors set up their stalls on the walkways, but always in an informal manner.
Some structures used for these stalls are not sturdy and many vendors are unable to trade in inclement weather.

Other stalls have been described as “untidy”, with pedestrians complaining that they obstruct the walkways.
The municipality hopes that this project will bring organised trading to the town, as well as strengthen urban/rural links as most of the vendors are from local informal settlements and rural areas.
The municipality worked together with the beneficiaries and will allocate the stalls through a committee to ensure fairness.
Permits will be issued to beneficiaries as the project nears completion.
