Umtamvuna Views: Hardworking councillor Dave Watson resigns

Lower South Coast residents will be losing one of the most dedicated and loyal stalwarts who has worked tirelessly over the years.

It is with sadness and regret that Lower South Coast residents will be losing one of the most dedicated and loyal stalwarts who has worked tirelessly over the years as ward councillor. He worked closely with ratepayers, town boards, school governing bodies, and many more.

Councillor Dave Watson said “After much consideration and with great sadness, I have decided to tender my resignation as a councillor. Due to the multiple failures of both municipalities, my position as a part-time councillor has morphed into a full-time occupation. My wife and I own a school and I will be devoting my time and energy to taking our school to the next level of excellence to ensure that the young minds entrusted to us receives the attention and care that they deserve.

A few years ago I had a massive heart attack. Failures of the state have resulted in my personal failure at remaining calm and dispassionate. My anger and frustration have once again emerged as being a direct threat to my health. This cannot continue as a life threat and I must place the interests of my beloved family as a priority.

It is with great sadness that I have come to the decision that I have made. I thank you all for the support and assistance that you have given me over the past 11 years in my time as one of your public representatives.” Dave, your scribe is sure that she speaks on behalf of the community in saying a great big thank you for all that you have done for us over the years. We wish you well in your new direction.

Everyone is invited to get involved in the community beach clean-up this coming Saturday, March 7. Meet at Silver Beach (main beach at Port Edward) at 8am. Port Edward Primary is hosting a fund-raising ‘barn dance’ at Cascade Estate on the Old Pont Road. Don your stetson and cowboy boots and join in the fun this Friday (6th) at 6pm.

Live music, supper and a rootin’ tootin’ good time all for just R150 pp, so contact the school at 039 3112219.

The monthly morning market is happening this Saturday (7th) at the Methodist Church from 8am to 12 noon. Come along to browse and enjoy a breakfast bun, pancakes and tea and coffee.

Your scribe has just returned from visiting her brother Richard in Cathcart, Eastern Cape. He is well and happy in a wonderful old-age home there. It was interesting (and sad) to hear that in that town the municipality is totally defunct. Their offices are closed, residents cannot even pay rates and service fees and a group of caring and skilled farmers are doing their best to keep the water supply running. The residents, both poor and affluent, are struggling horribly just to survive there. Fortunately they have recently received good rains after years of drought.

All news to Philippa.
