Hibberdene Happenings: Lovable Thelma turns 95

Thelma and good friend Mike Hoyer, who turned 95 on March 7, were both avid bowlers in their day.

No water, extended periods of darkness due to load shedding and the COVID-19 virus – what could be next?

A huge happy birthday to ‘everyone’s favourite lady’ Thelma Naudé of Mtwalume, who celebrates her 95th birthday on March 18. Always the life and soul of the party, Thelma lives her life to the full and her looks and actions certainly belie her age.

She socialises every week, attends the Methodist Church every Sunday and is always ready with a laugh and a joke – in fact, she is an absolute joy to know. Thelma and good friend Mike Hoyer, who turned 95 on March 7, were both avid bowlers in their day and the local clubhouse boasts many photos and memorabilia featuring these two great people.

Thelma’s celebrations started early with the arrival of her niece and great-niece Anne and Elise van der Veen from London, who spent the week prior to her birthday with her, but unfortunately had to move on earlier to spend time with other relatives. Thelma, may you have a very happy day and many more years with those who love you dearly.

Last Saturday was indeed a sad day when the community learnt of the death of Jill Bylett after a long illness very bravely borne. Jill died just a few days short of her 87th birthday on March 25. Your scribe could write a book about Jill’s involvement with Hibberdene.

She was a former Lion, involved with the distribution of medication on a Wednesday, organised fun walks on the beach, entertainment and games for the children, was chairman of the caravan park’s ‘Open Door’ club for many years, supervised keep-fit classes and generally kept everyone on their toes.

Most 20-somethings in town lovingly refer to her as ‘Aunty Jill’, having been part of her entertainment programme on the beach and in the caravan park for many years.

In later years she became very involved with the Methodist Church, giving Sunday school classes and conducting ‘chair exercises’ for more mature women on a Wednesday morning. She lived her life to the full and will be sadly missed.

Blue Waters Pub and Grill celebrated its first birthday under the new management recently and heartiest congratulations are extended. A huge fun day will be held this Saturday, March 21 (Human Rights Day), with a bring and braai, entertainment, music and specials on offer. Be sure to attend. Mizpah men’s breakfast will also be held  at the church on March 21 at 7am. R20 gets you a tasty breakfast and great fellowship. Contact Edgar Lilje at 084 5820772 for more information.

Prizewinners in the latest Lions’ lucky draw have been announced and all donors are thanked and winners congratulated. Renuka Lalsing – Feed and Seed; Louise Korsten – Fifi’s Fresh Fish; Sandra Schoeman – Tiago’s Open Flame; Liz Coulson – Salon Marguerite; Ellen van Coller – Blue Waters Pub and Grill; Willie van Rensburg – Hibberdene Pharmacy; Thelma Naudé – Donnée Water, and Linda Kent – Christmas cake.

Besides Thelma, birthdays to be celebrated this week are Maureen Murray (19th), Rob James (21st), Malaika Majali (23rd) and Dalaine Goliath (24th), while Greer and Doug Henderson celebrate their anniversary on March 18th.

Ruth Smith has been admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke. Please remember her and her husband Ferdi in your thoughts and prayers.

Remember to keep Lizzie busy with all things Hibberdene.
