New head for Suid-Natal High

His love for children led him to pursuing teaching as a career.

New principal at Suid-Natal High, Jakkie Herbst says,”teaching is a passion, if you don’t have it, it’s not for you.”

Mr Herbst took the helm on February 1.

His love for children led him to pursuing teaching as a career.

His first posting was at Nigel Primary in 1992 where he taught grades 4 to 7.

He then taught in Alberton between 1997 and 2000, followed by a stint as departmental head at Heidelberg Public School from 2001 to 2005.

Mr Herbst then left teaching for a few years and worked as a manager at a hardware group.

However, in 2010 he returned to the profession and took up a post at Durban North College. He was promoted to deputy principal in 2017.

In 2018, he was appointed deputy principal at Suid-Natal High.

Over the years Mr Herbst has coached several rugby and cricket teams, both at Durban North College and at Suid-Natal.

“As teachers, we create opportunities for pupils to excel in sport, cultural activities and academics.”

Teaching runs in the Herbst family.

Mr Herbst’s wife, Anchen is a departmental head at Suid-Natal, older son Dian is a teacher’s assistant at the same school while younger son Jaden is a grade 9 pupil.

The couple’s daughter, Juriska is teaching in China.
