Fidler in the Hood: Keep your distance has a new meaning

Seems this ‘pandemic thing’ is turning out to be a little bit more serious than anticipated.

Hi there, not quite Groundhog Day, but seems this ‘pandemic thing’ is a little bit more serious than anticipated and nobody is immune from the dreaded ‘lurgy’. Just, remember, friends: ‘Why worry we’ll get through, just like we always do.’ So sang our Vera (Lynn) some 75 years ago. Incidentally, Vera celebrates her 103rd birthday this week, so there’s still hope. On with the show.

Disappointment all round for local conservationist David Hallé who called to say his eagerly-anticipated yachting holiday off the coast of Brazil has had to be postponed. The virus has spread to the South American continent, including David’s planned ports-of-call in Brazil. But, as the ever-positive Mr Hallé remarked ‘There are so many beautiful places here, so enjoy.’ Great attitude.

You have to smile, even laugh, how people react to this year’s flavour-of-the-month epidemic. Taking a morning stroll along Lilliecrona Boulevard, Uvongo, and gathering up umpteen discarded beverage bottles, there was a beer bottle of a well-known brew ‘made in Mexico’ (no clues).

Hanti Kotze, formerly of Northcliff, Johannesburg, is wished a warm welcome to the South Coast.

Laughing sarcastically and showing the labelled-bottle to a fellow Olympian, she responded “This coronavirus is getting too much. I’m sick of it already”. (Hope she was referring to the actual name and not the disease itself, otherwise I’m a ‘goner’.)

A recent visitor said “For four years we heard nothing but the ‘B’ (Brexit) word in the UK. Now it’s the ‘C’ (corona) word, I wonder what the ‘D’ word will stand for when it comes round?”

It is now exactly 25 days since that last close encounter of a third kind when two Manchester clubs fought it out – 25 days … that’s 600 hours, 36 000 seconds. A man could die in that time. (Referring to the absence of English football on television).

‘Experts’ are forecasting ‘probably at least’ another 10 weeks of this enforced self-flagellation. It has been a trying time, friends.

Your scribe even watched a golden oldie of City hero Sergio Aguero’s greatest goals scored for Manchester City: all 269 of them, followed by two memorable matches ‘We Won Once’ and ‘How Long Since?’ They were both on the ‘All Our Yesterdays’ channel … the paint on the wall is now dry. See you, Rob.
