Make your home your ‘safe space’

Some practical tips to help you bunker down.

With South Africa in a state of disaster due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, now is a good time to adopt a less stringent form of self-isolation.

It’s easier than you might think:

* Establish a disinfection hub in the home, where hand sanitiser is freely available.

* Hold a family meeting and reinforce good hygiene habits.

* Have medical prescriptions filled, and get in some common cold or flu medication along with vitamins. If you are worried about going into a public space due to health concerns, ask somebody to do this for you.

* Stock up on essentials, but don’t overstock. Make a list of what you will need before heading out to the supermarket. Non-perishables like canned goods, frozen veggies and easy to cook pasta are the way to go along with long life or powdered milk, grains, sugar, tea, coffee and basic condiments.

* Avoiding public gathering places means now is the perfect time to tackle that DIY project or declutter your home.

* Make it a priority to have quality family time, a game of cards or even a puzzle or two.

Above all be kind to yourself, take time to still your mind and relax be it meditation, a long hot bath or simply reflecting on your life.
