Free history lessons offered for pupils during lockdown

The candidate attorney is using the lockdown time to give back.

Mvutshini-born candidate attorney Lwazi Gwacela (28) is spending his ‘lockdown’ period helping pupils with their history studies.

With more than 30 pupils already on his WhatsApp group, Lwazi is determined to turn days that would have been a ‘miss’ in this year’s curriculum into positive ones.

“I’m sure most parents would agree, there’s probably no better way for pupils to spend the 21 days lockdown focusing on their studies than loitering around doing nothing,” he said.

A few weeks back, Lwazi wrote on his Facebook page, offering to help pupils with their history studies during lockdown period.

“I’m quite good in history. If there is any matriculant who would need some tutoring to cover for the time lost, I am available. No fees charged,” the post read.

According to Lwazi, the post has received numerous positive responses.

“At first I thought of doing online tutoring but later realised not everyone has access to internet at their homes and so I opted for a Whatsapp group.”

Lwazi tutors the pupils using their current curriculum from the Department of Education.

He also assists the pupils with whatever they do not understand or in what they might need help with.

“I’ve always loved history, from high school days, until I started tutoring it at the University of KwaZulu-Natal as part of clubs or programmes aimed at offering extra lessons to pupils in different subjects.”

Growing up in the rural village of Mvutshini, Lwazi knows just how lack of access to information can limit your knowledge when it comes to studies.

“When I was at school, I use to travel to Margate in order to access the library. Just like me, most children from rural communities still have no access to information.”

Lwazi holds a BA degree in legal studies and political science, as well as an LLB from UKZN. He is also the candidate attorney at Kooben Chetty & Associates.
