Four schools in Ugu district close after positive Covid-19 cases confirmed

The closure comes just a week after schools reopened for grade seven and 12 pupils after more than two months of lockdown.

It has since come to light, according to Harding Secondary principal, Trevor Laurence, that the school has in fact NOT been closed, despite what is written in the press release from the Department of Education.

The department spokesman Muzi Mahlambi has been contacted and a reply is awaited.

Four schools within the Ugu District were last week temporarily closed after both teachers and pupils tested positive for Covid-19.

The affected schools were Siphakamile Primary in Bhobhoyi, Harding Secondary, and Bongumbhele and Siphapheme High, both of which are in the Umzinto circuit.

These schools are among the 33 in the province which also had confirmed cases of Covid-19.

The closure comes just a week after schools reopened for grade seven and 12 pupils after more than two months of lockdown.

Last Sunday, MEC for Education in KZN, Kwazi Mshengu announced the unwelcome news. adding that the worst affected district was Umlazi.

Departmental spokesman Muzi Mahlambi released a statement which said, “22 educators, nine learners, one district office based official and one food handler” had tested positive.

Mr Mahlambi added that Bongumbhele High, Siphapheme High and Siphhakamile Primary were ready to reopen on Monday, June 15.
