Chemical engineering student turns tragedy to triumph

Akashnee Ramauthar has faced many challenges along the way, including the untimely death of her father, a traffic officer with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, in an accident a few years ago.

Akashnee Ramauthar recently graduated from DUT with a B Tech Chemical Engineering degree.

She attended Marburg Secondary, where she matriculated in 2015, and is the daughter of the late Sanjay and Pansy Ramauthar of Margate.

Like most teenagers she was uncertain as to what career to choose, but chemical engineering caught her eye. “It was definitely challenging but also in demand,” she said.

Many people she spoke to told her chemical engineering was extremely difficult and that she should be ‘extra sure’ it was what she wanted to do.

“Instead of being disheartened, this actually encouraged me to pursue this career. I figured that many people have done it and I know that if I put my mind to something I can achieve it,” she said.

During her final year of school she attended a work place shadowing in this field at Ugu District Municipality. “After that I was determined I was going to apply.”

She received her diploma in 2017 and now has her B Tech degree.

Akashnee has faced many challenges along the way, including the untimely death of her father, a traffic officer with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, in an accident a few years ago.

“It has not been an easy course and it took much sacrifice. My main motivation has been my parents, of course, as they have given up so much for me. I can only hope to make them proud. Even though my Dad could not be here to share my achievements, I know he’s always been with me and has been my strength throughout this journey,” she said.

She comes from a very close family and when she isn’t studying, she enjoys spending time relaxing with family and friends, especially those who have stood by her and motivated her.

“I would like to encourage others by saying that you should always put your mind to something as you can, and will, achieve it no matter how challenging it may seem.”

Akashnee is now planning on securing an internship and most likely studying for her Masters.
