Ugu District farmers to benefit from R11-million Covid-19 relief fund

About 160 women are beneficiaries of this programme, with more than 70 youth-owned enterprises also benefiting.

More than R11-million has been approved by the provincial government and allocated to distressed farmers in the Ugu District as part of the Covid-19 agricultural disaster relief fund.

This follows government’s recent announcement of funding packages for Covid-19 agricultural disaster relief which was open to all smallholding and communal farmers in the province.

The beneficiaries of this relief fund come from various villages under the four local municipalities of Ugu District: Umdoni, uMzumbe, Ray Nkonyeni and Umuziwabantu.

“ About 160 women are beneficiaries of this programme with more than 70 youth-owned enterprises  also benefiting,” said Cllr Dixie  Nciki, chairperson of the Ugu District Economic Sector and Infrastructure Development Command Council in a recent statement.

“Also, the district is pleased with the approved funding for 186 spaza shops and general dealers that have also been granted financial relief from the government.

“This support by government will provide much needed financial relief to our small and medium enterprises towards reaching their production targets which will give them a competitive advantage in their respective markets,” added the statement.
