Matric learner at Umzinto Secondary School tests positive for Covid-19
Due to the deep cleaning of classrooms, the school will be closed tomorrow, July 3.
Umzinto Secondary School confirmed yesterday that a matric learner had tested positive for Covid-19.
According to the school’s principal, Mrs RB Ramcheron, the parent of the matric learner informed the school of the positive test by telephone yesterday (1st) at about 11am.
“After receiving this information, strict protocols were followed and the Department of Health and Department of Education were informed,” said Mrs Ramcheron.
“They promised to respond within two hours and a mobile clinic, as well as personnel, were deployed to the school.”
News of the positive case spread like wildfire which lead to a number of parents fetching their children from school before members from the department arrived.

Learners who remained at school were reassured that most of them were not at risk if they had been wearing masks, practicing social distancing and sanitizing like they should.
The infected learner had not been at school since Monday, June 29 and had been self-isolating at home before receiving his results.
“Nine learners who were in close contact of the infected learner have since been tested and are awaiting their results,” added Mrs Ramcheron.
The Department of Health did a risk assessment and decided that the school was to remain open.
“No learners reported to school today (Thursday 2nd) and I wish to reassure parents and the community that a deep clean is being effected in all classrooms and that the utmost care is, and was, being taken to ensure the safety of our learners,” said Mrs Ramcheron.
Due to the deep cleaning of classrooms, the school will be closed tomorrow (Friday 3rd).
