No more NPS – it’s now NSC

If your vehicle is already registered and has an NPS number you will not be affected.

It’s official – NSC is the new registration for motorists in Port Shepstone as of Monday this week.

According to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, although NPS license plates might still be issued to a few motorists as these become available, NSC plates are now being allocated to those registering new vehicles.

If your vehicle is already registered and has an NPS number you will not be affected.

However, should you purchase a new vehicle or re-register a vehicle from outside the district, you will be issued a number with the new prefix.

This follows a council resolution last month taken in line with Regulation 34(1) of the National Road Traffic Act No.93 of 1996 which prescribes that a licence mark may not exceed a total of eight characters, inclusive of letters and digits.

This means that the alphanumeric options for NPS have run out, hence the need for a new prefix.

Acting spokesman for the municipality, Khanyiso Seyisi said, ” NSC (Natal South Coast) was the first option, with NUG (Natal uGu) and NRN (Natal Ray Nkonyeni) being the second and third options respectively.”

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli is said to have approved the new plates on June 17.
