Margate Saps has bid farewell to two dedicated officers who are retiring this month.

Captains Mbongeni Alpheus Cele and Gopichand Devrak have each spent 37 years serving the community of Margate.

The list of training courses they had attended over the years is comprehensive, and no doubt helped equip them to become experts in their fields.

Both officers were described as men with strong characters and good leadership skills, and both commented that the unfailing support of their families was pivotal in enabling them to fulfill their calling.

Capt Devrak said he could not believe that this long but rewarding journey was now over.

“I am grateful for the constant support from my fellow members, as well as from management.

“While there were times when I needed to be tough to ensure the community was properly served, I promised to advise and assist my brothers and sisters in blue when it came to improving their skills.”

Capt Cele said that his ‘heart is divided’. “I still see myself in service, but I also look forward to being at home.”

He attributed his success to God as he faced the challenges of being a policeman.

He added that he sees Margate as a station with members who observe and respect protocol.

“It was a privilege for me to be part of a station which won both Provincial and National Excellence Awards,” he said.

Margate Acting Station Commander Colonel Bheka Nala thanked the officers for being dedicated, passionate and supportive.

“They were always equal to the task at hand and will be remembered for their courage, love and inspiration.”
