Elderly man collapses and dies at Umkomaas beach

The man had apparently been crayfishing and spearfishing with his brother and a friend when he lost consciousness in the water.

An elderly man, believed to be a local in his 60s who had been crayfishing and spearfishing with his brother and a friend, died after collapsing at Umkomaas beach yesterday afternoon (July 17).

Reports from the scene indicate the trio was returning to shore when the man lost consciousness in the water.

His brother and friend were able to get him to shore where  CPR was initiated.

Rocky Bay’s National Sea Rescue Institute, ER24 ambulance services, eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services, Amanzimtoti beach office and Saps members responded.

“Paramedics continued with CPR, but despite their efforts, the man was declared dead at the scene,” said Nicki Gibson, NSRI Rocky Bay deputy station commander.

An inquest docket has been opened.
