The vital work was completed on time and will come as welcome news to the surrounding community.

Plans to upgrade Ugu’s water infrastructure are under way, with a new a new low lift pump station being installed and commissioned at Umthamvuna Raw Water Pump Station this week.

“The old pump was sent for a complete overhaul and will serve as a temporary standby unit,” said Ugu spokesman, France Zama.

It is believed the R1.4 million pump installation will provide a greater capacity to meet the growing water demand in areas serviced by the Umthamvuna system.

“The commissioning of this pump forms part of the municipality’s continued efforts to upgrade its water infrastructure thus enabling it to respond to the ever-increasing demand for water supply in the district.

“The next phase of the infrastructure upgrade at this pump station involves a power upgrade by Eskom, and the Hanover pump station is intended to increase water production at this plant to create a reliable source of supply,” added Mr Zama.

In addition, Mr Zama noted that the recent spike in confirmed cases of Covid-19 among municipal employees still posed a real threat to the execution of municipal services.

“We appeal for calm and patience from our customers who might be inconvenienced. “Rest assured, the municipality is doing everything possible to combat the rapid spread of Covid-19 infections among its workers.”
