Can’t or won’t recycle? These two brothers can…

Dru and Ty de Bruyn suddenly noticed how much more rubbish they had that could not be used in their compost heap.

During lockdown, as with many others, Kym Pollard of Southbroom and her family stocked up mainly on tinned food as opposed to fresh produce, as she was not sure when she could get to the shops again.

Her two sons Dru and Ty de Bruyn, aged 15 and 12, suddenly noticed how much more rubbish they had that could not be used in their compost heap.

They started collecting the cans and after lockdown took them for recycling and received R40 for their efforts.

They were very proud that they were now able to make their own pocket money, as there was none available due to Kym not being able to operate her dive and charter business.

“My boys love all animals, they scuba dive, love being outdoors and are members of 1st Margate Scouts,” she said.

The boys have decided to continue to help save the environment, while continuing to recycle cans, tins and scrap metal.

They hope to get into plastic and such a bit later when they have more information.

Proceeds from the recycling have been split, with each brother taking a third and a third being donated to the SPCA.

You can support them in their efforts by either dropping cans at Aqua Planet Dive Centre and Charter, corner of Marine Drive and Kings Road in Shelly Beach or WhatsApp Kym at 082 877 3966 and they will gladly collect.
