Leila’s Lane: Well-known farmer and Rotarian Eldred dies

He dedicated many years to serving others while with the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone.

Umtentweni has lost another well-known figure in farmer Eldred Stott, who died aged 79.

He was born into a farming family in Port Shepstone on April 29 1941.

Eldred attended Hilton College and was an avid sportsman who loved tennis, bowls and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Jo, son Stuart and daughter-in-law Maggie (who live in the USA), daughter Peggy Thompson and son-in-law Ivan, grandchildren Michael (who cared lovingly for him while his grandmother was in hospital last month), Margot, Nick and Neve, as well as his siblings Gavin, Carine, Alistair, Sylvia and Heather.

In his later years Eldred needed assistance and the family conveyed its heartfelt gratitude to the staff who always took such good care of him, namely Mfishane Njakazi, Florence Shazi, Nokuthula Madlala, Makhosazane Mkhize, and Mathandi Shusha. ‘Siyabonga kakhulu’.

Eldred was a noted Rotarian who dedicated many years to serving others while with the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow as well as a past president of the club.

In other news, Tweni is still under threat with brazen people breaking curfew to steal light fittings.

A ladder was stolen from John du Bruin’s yard, taken to Abingdon Woods and used to steal the lights, then abandoned in the grounds on the complex.

Other residents have also reported lights being stolen from homes.

Theresa Nortjie reported a bush fire near the whale deck.

Thankfully, she phoned the fire department as well, otherwise we could have lost the deck which is now a popular Tweni landmark.
