Police educate farm workers on GBV
Staff were informed about their rights when it comes to gender-based violence and were encouraged to report these crimes to their nearest police station.
Margate SAPS held an awareness campaign on gender-based violence at the Valleen Farm in Ramsgate on Monday this week.
Police spokesman Sergeant Sbu Ncane said the presentation was well received by the farm employees.
He added that the campaign was part of an ongoing initiative by the station and would be taken to other parts of the South Coast.
“The farm staff were informed about their rights when it comes to gender-based violence and were encouraged to report these crimes to their nearest police station,” said Sgt Ncane.
“The session was interactive and the staff engaged with police by asking questions.”
Station Commander Brigadier William Slabbert urged all victims of gender-based violence to report these cases.
“Both male and female victims are encouraged to come forward. Male victims of domestic violence are often afraid to report this because they fear stigmatisation, but we want to assure them that they too have the right to report such crimes, and they should,” he said.
Gender-based violence and other crimes can be reported anonymously on 082 4177784.
