No foul play in Mthwalume murder suspect’s jail death, rules Ipid

Police Minister Bheki Cele has said that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) had ruled out foul play in the death of one of the suspects in the Mthwalume murders.
This after the chief suspect was found hanged from a shower head in the Scottburgh police cells on the morning he was to appear in court after reportedly having made a confession.

It is understood that the man had used a string from his tracksuit pants to hang himself, prompting an Ipid investigation into his sudden death.
He was declared dead in the holding cells by paramedics.
The case against the second suspect was dismissed due to lack of evidence linking him to the murders.
The bodies of five women Nosipho (16) and Akhona Gumede (25), Baja Duma (23), Zama Chiliza (38) and Nelisiwe Dube have been found in sugarcane fields in the Mthwalume area in the last four months.
Yesterday (Wednesday), Minister Cele told reporters he’d received feedback on the investigation.

“The report from the Ipid confirms that there was no recklessness on the part of police. That’s the report I have, and the autopsy led to solid confirmation.”
