Olisiwinga College delighted with iPad donation

For many schools in rural communities, state-of-the art technology is nothing but a dream.

Some pupils have to travel to other towns to access technological infrastructure, which comes at a cost to parents who are already struggling with a lack of finances.

This was a gap which urgently needed to be filled, and so Olisiwinga College in the Amadiba area, built by private individuals from Bizana, came into being.

With the college’s main focus being science and technology, it drew the attention of Communications Minister, Stella Ndabeni Abrahams, who has donated 40 brand new iPads to pupils.

Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams said her department, with the help of MTN, had managed to source information and communications technology equipment which would help the school.

“Increasingly, schools and parents across the country have begun embracing the use of technology to augment and in some cases, replace some traditional methods of teaching and learning,” she said.

The minister added that such interventions were critical in order to “meet developmental priorities as a nation and to bridge education inequalities, which ultimately define every aspect of young lives in our country”.

“We must ensure that children who live under conditions of poverty are given sufficient support, infrastructural and otherwise, to enable them to access quality education.”

The minister also visited Amadiba clinic to monitor how front line essential services workers were dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

Together with Eastern Cape speaker Mlibo Qoboshiyane, KZN legislature speaker Nontembeko Boyce and Mbizana Municipality mayor Daniswa Mafumbatha, the minister handed over personal protective equipment to staff at the healthcare facility.
