Umzinto house robber jailed for 10 years

Brigadier Anton Kapp congratulated the investigating officer for swiftly finalising the case.

The Scottburgh Regional Court recently sentenced Sphelele Mampela Khumalo (30) for an Umzinto robbery.

Reports indicate that on March 30, a young woman was with her child and disabled father at their home in Shayamoya, Umzinto, when Khumalo broke open their door.

He threatened the woman at knifepoint to hand over cellphones and other personal items.

To avoid being harmed, she cooperated with the man’s demands. He then fled the scene, and a case of house robbery was opened at Umzinto Saps.

Sergeant Jairus Perumal of Umzinto Detective Service investigated the case, and with the collaboration of local security services, Khumalo was arrested within 24 hours, and the stolen property was recovered.

After being found guilty, Khumalo received a 10-year sentence. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Acting Ugu District Commissioner, Brigadier Anton Kapp, said the sentence serves as a deterrent to criminals who prey on vulnerable members of society, and reinforces trust in all sectors of law enforcement who keep all safe.

He further congratulated the investigating officer for swiftly finalising the case.
