Finalist Sibongile brings GBV to forefront

Sibongile also has various business and other interests in the Durban and Pinetown areas.

Sibongile Ndawo Engel, who has a family business in Mtwalume, is the only contestant from KwaZulu-Natal in this year’s Mrs Universe South Africa pageant. She had been running her family business, a guest lodge on the South Coast, when she decided to pursue her Mrs Universe journey.

The mother of four children has also been busy managing a young, up-and-coming artist, DJ Sabzaboy, well known as Gqom Prince. Sibongile also has various business and other interests in the Durban and Pinetown areas. She said that the purpose of the pageant is to help support and empower women in South Africa and to bring wealth to communities.

“The pageant gives us a platform to inspire, mentor and support women in South Africa and especially to raise awareness around the issues of human trafficking, domestic violence and abuse,” she said. “Contestants need to raise awareness and funds for charities to help the victims of this abuse,” she added.

Sibongile is the brand ambassador for Open Door Crisis Care Centre. Two winners will be crowned, Mrs Universe SA and Mrs Universe Africa, and both will take part at Mrs Universe 2020. The Mrs Universe pageant is the biggest one globally catering for married and divorced women.  The grand finale will take place at the end of the year due to pandemic, venue to be confirmed.
