“The officers gave chase and the driver only stopped when he discovered that the officers were closing in after a lengthy pursuit,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

The driver came to a halt near the Mphambanyoni river in Amandawe.

“He and his passenger alighted from the vehicle and they opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. The passenger sustained fatal injuries, while the driver was injured, treated by paramedics at the scene and arrested.”

One firearm was recovered.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen in Pietermaritzburg earlier this month.

Scottburgh Saps is investigating cases of attempted murder, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
