Music gives Sezela songbird Jaidene direction

The Umzinto Secondary matric pupil's love for music began at the age of eight when she first heard the hit 'One Thing' by world-renowned boy band, One Direction.

Sezela songstress, Jaidene Carianne Naicker (17) has a passion for music and believes that it allows people to express themselves, and brings them together.

The Umzinto Secondary matric pupil’s love for music began at the age of eight when she first heard the hit ‘One Thing’ by world-renowned boy band, One Direction.

Jaidene realised that even though she thoroughly enjoyed listening to music, she wanted to experience it on another level, and that’s when, aged 10, she began singing.

Music runs in her family.

“I am a third generation singer and follow in the footsteps of my grandfather and mother,” she explained.

“My dad and grandfather are also guitarists.”

Like most people, Jaidene was shy when she first began performing before an audience.

Over time though, she began feeling more comfortable in the spotlight – largely, she said, thanks to her parents encouraging and supporting her every step of the way.

Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jaidene often performed at family functions and was part of the band at her local church.

Criticism is part and parcel of any singer’s career, and those who are unable to accept this sometimes give up on their dreams, said Jaidene

She added that she had however learnt to take criticism well and keep moving forward.

“There have been times where I’ve sung off key at church,” she said.

“But I always listen to my dad when he corrects me, and I make sure I learn from my mistakes and move on.”

Earlier this year, Jaidene decided to share her talent with a much wider audience by sharing her recordings of her favourite covers on Facebook.

“I was glad to see the many positive comments and reactions my first video received and it truly made me believe in myself even more,” she said.

All this positivity gave Jaidene the confidence to enter a talent competition.

To her surprise and delight, she placed second.

She listens to music every morning, evening and during study sessions.

“Even on my worst day, I know that I can count on music to brighten me up.”

The young singer enjoys watching Netflix, TikTok and spending time with her friends when she’s not studying for her finals or doing homework.

Once she has matriculated, Jaidene plans on enrolling for a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Geography and Environmental Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

“But given the opportunity, I would love to pursue a career in music,” she added.

She looks up to Grammy award winning songwriter, speaker and worship leader, Brooke Ligertwood, and thanks God and her loving family and friends for always supporting her music ventures.

“To the young aspiring musicians and artists out there, believe in yourselves and follow your hearts like I am doing. Never let anyone tell you you’re too young to fulfill your dreams.”
