South Coast EFF joins in shutdown of Clicks stores

All five Clicks stores on the Lower South Coast Region were today closed by protesters.

EFF Lower South Coast Region has joined the National EFF’s call to shut down all Clicks stores countrywide.

Today, Monday, September 7, EFF members shut down branches at Oribi Plaza, Southcoast Mall, Port Edward, Hibiscus Mall and Shelly Centre.

The demand was clear – shut down the stores so that profit is lost – in response to a racist advert published on the retail chain’s website last week.

Speaking at Oribi Plaza  earlier today, EFF chairman Ncedo Njenga said they planned to ensure the stores are closed throughout the week.

“We are here to protect our sisters against racism, we are saying racism must fall. The advert undermined black women and those involved should suffer the consequences.”

The advert included pictures of four women, two black and two white and describing the hair of the two black women as ‘dry and damaged’ and ‘frizzy and dull’, while the images depicting the white women’s hair were described as ‘fine and flat’ and ‘normal’.

The EFF said that the advert undermined the dignity of black South Africans and suggested that the ‘hair of black people is damaged and inferior to that of white people’.

Clicks apologised for the campaign, calling it a mistake. However the EFF said action should be taken against those involved.
