Second time (un)lucky for Scottburgh Mall robbers

The tracker company and Durban K9 Unit were notified and the vehicle was traced to Nandi Drive in Durban where the other three suspects were arrested.

A week after an abortive armed robbery attempt at a cellphone shop at Scottburgh Mall, the same shop was targeted by four armed men on Friday afternoon last week, this time successfully.

“The robbers loaded the stolen goods into a trolley and removed the CCTV recording equipment before fleeing,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

Gladiator Security guards were able to apprehend one of the suspects, who was then handed over to the police.

Investigations revealed that the apprehended suspect was the owner of the getaway vehicle, which was fitted with a tracking device.

The tracker company and Durban K9 Unit were notified and the vehicle was traced to Nandi Drive in Durban where the other three suspects were arrested.

“The tracker company also alerted the Saps that a Toyota Avanza – registered to the suspect – was parked at the mall. A search revealed that the vehicle had been fitted with false number plates,” added Captain Francis.

“Investigations are continuing to connect these suspects to other criminal activities.”

Cellphones and firearms were recovered during the arrests.
