Scottburgh welcomes visitors as beaches re-open
The reopening of these public spaces means that the municipality's respective teams under beaches and parks facilities will have to, once again, operate and manage spaces efficiently.
Since the re-opening of beaches under the adjusted level 3 lockdown restrictions, the foot count in the mid-South Coast area has visibly increased.
Umdoni beaches, including Scottburgh, Park Rynie, Preston and Rocky Bay, have welcomed many visitors from Durban and further afield this week.
The reopening of these public spaces means that the municipality’s respective teams under beaches and parks facilities will have to, once again, operate and manage spaces efficiently.
Lifeguards in the area have already been well prepared on how to handle any situation at the beach, bearing in mind the Covid-19 precautionary measures, and are ready to assist beachgoers.
“The municipality is mindful that this leisure activity (swimming) has been missed by water lovers and we therefore urge bathers to take responsibility for their own safety and observe strict Covid-19 protocols,” said Umdoni Municipality spokesman Sphelele Cele.
This followed after the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported a number of drowning and water related incidents, some fatal, since beaches have been re-opened.
Ms Cele said the frequently visited municipal campsite in Park Rynie will operate at a 50 percent capacity rate to ensure strict adherence to protocols.
A stern reminder was also issued, that law enforcement will conduct compliance checks and was ready to ‘crack the whip’ on anyone found to be in contravention of the law.
Umdoni Mayor, Councillor Sibongile Khathi, said a lot has been done to flatten the curve.
“The aim is to ensure a significant decrease in cases to a point where we have triumphed over this pandemic and no new cases are recorded for our community,” she said.
“Enjoy the facilities under the uncompromised practice of all health protocols to safeguard your health and those around you.”
Residents are reminded of the national curfew, from 11pm to 4am.
The municipality warned that those in contravention of this curfew would face the full might of the law.
“Too many lives have been lost due to Covid-19 and there is no more room left for negotiations with this pandemic. The fight against this pandemic will be won if we are responsible as a collective and adhere to the rules and regulations.”
