Team effort to tackle crime in Tweni
Basil Lanka of Lazer 911 said a man was apprehended and handed over to Saps on the scene.
A joint operation between Lazer 911, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement, Saps and the Tweni Community Policing Forum (CPF) yielded excellent results last Thursday evening.
There was a turnout of 25, divided in groups of five.
Each checked for shacks and/or loitering vagrants in isolated and bushy areas in and around Umtentweni.
The teams walked the railway line and raided three abandoned houses.
Basil Lanka of Lazer 911 said a man was apprehended and handed over to Saps on the scene.
“Squatters were warned to leave the area and unoccupied shelters demolished. Numerous stop-and-searches were made,” he said.
Mr Lanka said a follow-up was conducted the next evening by the Lazer team to see whether all had compiled with the warnings.
“If not, arrests will be made,” he said.
Mr Lanka said more raids are planned for the near future, not just for Umtentweni but for other areas as well.
He asked the community to message Lazer about potential hotspots and abandoned houses.
“Send us the address, he urged.
Mike Lambourn, Lazer’s raid operations coordinator, thanked his own team as well as Saps and Law Enforcement for the willing support.
“These operations will be a common occurrence going forward. The community can play its part and be our eyes and ears, reporting on suspicious activity.”
Tweni CPF chairman Selvan Chetty also thanked Saps and Law Enforcement for their co-operation.
“Residents appreciate these kind of operations taking place. We plan to grow our members and have more of these operations in order to start the process of cleaning-up our suburb.”
