Illegal power connections spark anger
The men replied that they were from Eskom, but then ran away, leaving a mess behind.
Residents of Sunwich Port were horrified to find people trying to illegally connect to an electricity box last Saturday.
And this is not the first time, they say.
Johan Strydom said he was going for a walk last Saturday when he stumbled across two men with a grinder, cables and a pick trying to dig up the road in order to connect to a nearby electrical box.
“I asked them if they were from Eskom, if they had a permit and if so, why had they not barricaded the road?”
The men replied that they were from Eskom, but then ran away, leaving a mess behind.
“They had connected the grinder to the electrical box and were cutting through the tar. They had dug up sections of the verge and had broken the electrical box in the process,” he said.
Residents say this is not the first time it’s happened, and there have been reports of people who have tried to connect to two others boxes in the neighbourhood.
“They tampered with one box further down the road and another box in a resident’s garden. They even ventured into a nearby yard in an attempt to connect to an electrical box,” he said.
Residents are annoyed that while everyone is trying to keep the area neat and tidy, others seemingly just don’t care.
“They should be held accountable and made to repair the road,” said Mr Strydom.
Eskom acknowledged it had received the Herald’s query and would provide feedback as soon as possible.
