Local mini series addresses taboos
The story follows the life of a young adult, Magenagena (played by Mvango), the son of a supermarket worker and cobbler, who grew up in rural Eastern Cape.
A young man from Margate Extension 3, along with his team of two directors and local cast members aim to revolutionise entertainment on the South Coast with their upcoming mini series, Babylonia.
It is conceptualised by Aviwe Kumkani Mvango, a 24-year-old aspiring producer, actor, musician and director.
“What inspired me would definitely be my life experiences.”
He said there are a lot of things that people want to talk about but they don’t have the voice or platform and that there are a lot of topics that they shy away from.
“Babylonia is basically all about getting into the depths of taboos: drugs, alcohol abuse, gender-based violence, sexuality, poverty and everything happening in our country and society,” Mr Mvango said.
The story follows the life of a young adult, Magenagena (played by Mvango), the son of a supermarket worker and cobbler, who grew up in rural Eastern Cape.
His family moved to KwaZulu-Natal in search of a better life in the middle class suburb of Margate Extension 3.
Magenagena has an older brother, Ta Kay, and after the birth of their younger brother, Aphelele his parents struggle to make ends meet.
This leads him down a path of violence and crime in an effort to provide for his family.
“Magenagena is also a musician, and all he wants is to make it in the music industry, and feels he can’t get out of a life of crime because of his family situation. He also struggles with his identity, as he continues to try to find his place and purpose in the world,” Mr Mvango said.
Assistant director, Linge Jonas said initiatives like these are beneficial to community development.
“What I like most about the series is what it’s doing for the young people in our neighbourhood of Extension 3. It’s creating an alternative to people being on the street. We are building something and inspiring creatives to achieve their goals.”
The first episode will be released in either late April, or early May and is set to air on YouTube on a weekly basis
“We are collaborating, trying to push this dream. This is the first step we’re taking to working together and building something we all will enjoy. We encourage the public to lookout for the series, and we are open to donations and assistance,” said fellow director Brendan Mthembu.
