Ugu temporary closes Margate beach and lagoon to carry out pump repairs
Locals (and visitors) are seriously hoping the repairs will be done properly so that this situation does not happen again.
The Ugu District Municipality has temporarily closed the Margate beach and lagoon following a sewage spill.
Mondli Ngcobo, acting senior manager of Mayoralty and Communications of Ugu District Municipality, said that no recreational activity will be allowed at the lagoon and beach.
“A contractor has started repairs to a faulty pump at the waste water treatment works and there is the possibility of the Nkongweni River, which flows into the Margate beach, being polluted,” said Mr Ngcobo.
As a result, it was recommended that the beach be closed for recreational purposes as a precautionary measure to prevent any health-related illnesses.
Mr Ngcobo explained that the closure will remain in place until repairs to the pump are completed and periodic sampling is carried out.
He also said that the public will be informed as to when the beach and lagoon will be re-opened for recreational purposes.
“Disaster Management Services will assist with the display of signage and a request is made that Ray Nkonyeni Municipality lifeguards ensure that no swimming is allowed at the beach or lagoon.
The municipality apologises for any inconveniences emanating from the above that may have been caused,” said Mr Ngcobo.
