Hijackers cornered by community, Saps make arrests
According to police, the driver attempted to flee, but was unsuccessful after falling.
Three suspected hijackers were caught by community members from Bhakajane in KwaCele after allegedly attempting to hijack a Quantum taxi on February 17.
It is believed that the taxi driver was dropping off his last passenger in the area that evening when the passenger pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the driver and demanded cash.
According to police, the driver attempted to flee, but was unsuccessful after falling.
The man was brought back to his taxi and made to lie between the seats while one of the hijackers took over the steering of the vehicle and drove towards Amahlongwa.
A local witnessed the incident and immediately alerted others in the community, who began chasing the taxi.
The hijacker began having difficulties steering the vehicle and decided to abandon it.
He then jumped into a get-away vehicle with two accomplices in it nearby.
All three men were about to flee, but were soon cornered by the community members and had nowhere to run.
Police arrived shortly thereafter and the three men were arrested and vehicle recovered.
They are expected to appear at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court this week for a formal bail hearing.
The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Jacques Vermaak of Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, Port Shepstone.
