R50-million turnaround plan approved
The municipality's acting ANC chief whip, Councillor Phila Thabethe, has acknowledged that they will eventually need more funds for this type of rehabilitation plan, but said that this is only the beginning of bigger things to come.
Umdoni Municipality‘s council approved a R50-million service delivery turnaround plan last Friday, designed to rehabilitate rural, urban and peri-urban parts of Umdoni.
According to Umdoni’s communications manager, Sphelele Cele, the plan is a comprehensive four-month programme expected to resuscitate the dilapidated infrastructure.
Major work will be done to restore both rural and urban roads, which entails maintenance of roads and storm water, maintenance of facilities, street lighting, verge maintenance, electrification and refuse removal among other service delivery issues which require attention.
“Funds have been duly allocated in accordance to the severity of the service delivery needs for each constituency, also with a view of ensuring tangible progress in breaching the evident developmental gap between the rural and urban communities of Umdoni,” added Ms Cele.

Services and allocation of funds has been approved as follows:
• Maintenance of roads and storm water – R31.5-million.
• Electrification – R8-million.
• Grass cutting – R1.5-million.
• Street lighting – R2-million.
• Refuse removal – R5-million.
• Maintenance of community facilities – R2-million.
Umdoni mayor, Councillor Sibongile Khathi, expressed council’s gratitude for this rehabilitation plan.
“When I assumed office, I openly declared that this council will ensure a progressive turnaround of Umdoni, and the implementation of this multimillion rand turnaround strategy is one of many initiatives in realising the said turnaround,” she said.
Ms Cele stated the executive committee, council and relevant portfolios will play an oversight role in the implementation of all programmes to ensure that they things run smoothly and effectively.
The rehabilitation plan will commence this month.
