Policeman, motorist shot dead in Umkomaas
A 72-Hour Activation Plan has been implemented to mobilise necessary resources to investigate the incident.
Gunmen, who shot dead a policeman, crashed their vehicle being driven at high speed on being chased by police on patrol.
They then fatally shot a motorist before they fled in the stolen vehicle in Umkomaas earlier this morning.
“A police captain, aged 55, stationed at Umkomaas detectives was on his way to work driving a state vehicle on the M14, in the Roseneath area in Umkomaas near a secondary school when he was followed by a vehicle with four men at about 7.15am,” said Colonel Brenda Muridili.
While the policeman was at a speed hump, the occupants in the vehicle opened fire on him.
“He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was declared dead at the scene.”
High calibre firearms were used.
The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. Umkomaas police officers that were busy conducting patrols in the area, spotted a vehicle travelling at high speed and they gave chase.
“The suspect’s vehicle crashed into a truck whilst fleeing from the police officers. The suspects alighted from their vehicle, robbed and fatally shot a motorist, aged 33, who was in the vicinity.
The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.
Police are still trying to follow all leads regarding the suspects.
Charges of murder and carjacking have been opened for investigation at Umkomaas SAPS.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed this attack on our member or anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to call the Crime Stop number 086 00 10111 or send tip-offs on MySAPS App. All information received will be treated with confidentiality,” said Colonel Muridili.
